Kiren Rijiju, the Minister for Law and Justice, who is currently in Slovakia to oversee the evacuation of Indian nationals stranded in Ukraine said that the huge evacuation process of students will require a high level of intervention, especially considering the number of Indian students that are being evacuated.
He added that PM Modi has delegated four senior ministers to complete the job successfully.
Rijiju is one of the four ‘special envoys’ deployed by the central government to supervise the evacuation process of Indian nationals in Ukraine’s neighboring countries under ‘Operation Ganga’.
He reached the Slovakian city of Kosice on Wednesday and interacted with the Indian students who had been evacuated there.
Around 17,000 Indian nationals have been evacuated from the country since the invasion from Russian forces began, and advisories were issued by the Indian embassy in Kyiv.
Under Operation Ganga, flights have been increased to clear the way for evacuating the rest of the students stranded in Ukraine.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Union Minister talked to students that were being facilitated there in hotels and said that they would send 370 students from Slovakia in two flights to India and that he would not leave until every Indian national was evacuated safely.
He added that they could face some difficulties along the way since there is a large number of students to be accounted for in a very short time, and India was the only country to carry out rescue operations of this level.
“Our priority is to evacuate everyone safely. We have already given our assurance to everyone that we will evacuate every Indian safely. It is Prime Minister’s direction that we will not leave anyone behind.
Those who are in the war zone, there are some compulsions. Even our embassy staff cannot reach there since firing and bombardment is underway.
So, there are difficulties. The evacuation is not that easy. The circumstances are very challenging. But still, we are making efforts.”
Kiren Rijiju said.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said nine flights took off on Thursday from Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Poland which included IAF aircraft and that six more flights are scheduled to depart shortly and they have plans to bring back more than 3000 nationals to India.
