Political Journey of Ghulam Nabi Azad
Ghulam Nabi Azad started politics in 1973 as the secretary of the Block Congress Committee in Bhalswa. This was the time when the eyes of the Congress fell on its future leader and the Congress chose Azad as the President of the Youth Congress, seeing his activism and style. He contested and won the first parliamentary election in 1990 from Washim constituency in Maharashtra.
After this, in 1992, Ghulam Nabi Azad was successful in making a place in the cabinet as a Union Minister. In the year 2005, Ghulam Nabi Azad became the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. From here, his stature in the Congress increased a bit more. During Azad’s tenure as the president of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, the Congress had won 21 seats in the assembly elections. As a result, Congress emerged as the second largest political party in the state. Azad was re-elected to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly in 2008 from Bhaderwah.
After this, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha for the fourth term in 2009 and later Ghulam Nabi Azad, appointed as the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, was elected Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha in the year 2014.
