Zaporizhzhia is one of the four regions of Ukraine annexed by Russia, the illegal seizure of its territory by force will not be accepted by Kyiv and has been condemned by Ukraine’s allies.
On Thursday, Regional Governor Oleksandr Starukh said that shelling of Zaporizhzhia by the Russian forces killed at least two people overnight in the city, damaged several residential buildings and led to widespread fires. Starukh wrote on the Telegram app that one woman died in the shelling, and another one while going to the hospital due to the seven Russian strikes.
He said that at least five people are below the rubble of the buildings. He also added that a lot of people were saved, which includes a three year old girl, who is being taken care of.
A rescue operation is ongoing in Zaporizhzhia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian state to take control of Europe’s biggest nuclear power station in Zaporizhzhia, It is still run by Ukrainian engineers despite the Russian forces capturing it early in the war.
The power station is located right on the front line, on a bank of a reservoir controlled by Russian forces with Ukraine’s forces being on the opposite bank and the danger of a nuclear disaster has been warned by both sides.
