On Saturday, the renaming of the cities of Aurangabad and Osmanabad was authorized by the Maharashtra chief minister, Eknath Shinde, during the cabinet meeting.
Speaking to the media, Following the cabinet meeting, CM Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis informed that the names of Aurangabad and Osmanabad were changed to “Chhatrapati” Sambhaji Nagar and “Dharashiv,” respectively.
The decision to rename the cities was made by the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) administration. A proposal was passed to call Aurangabad as Sambhaji Nagar by MVA. The Shinde administration, however, disagreed with the decision, calling it “illegal” because it was made after the governor asked them to prove their majority in the State Legislative Assembly.
As of today, the Maharashtra cabinet includes only two members Shinde and Fadnavis as cabinet expansion is still awaiting.
A statement issued by Chief Minister’s Office said, the proposal to rename cities approved today by the cabinet shall be passed by the state legislature and then sent to the Centre. Only After which, the renaming of cities at various levels will be done.
The cabinet also approved a proposal to rename Navi Mumbai International Airport after a prominent farmer leader D B Patil.
The statement issued by Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said, the administration was reportedly asked to submit a new name proposal for the airport, which was accepted on Saturday. The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) is developing the Navi Mumbai airport as a greenfield airport on an area of 1,160 hectares through a public-private partnership.
In a turn of events, the MVA government comprising Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress collapsed last month on June 29, following the rebellion by Shiv Sena MLA Eknath Shinde and his supporters. The reason for the rebellion, as stated by Mr. Shinde was Shiv Sena’s coalition with Congress and NCP. He believed the Sena should cut its links with Congress and the NCP in order to advance Babasaheb Thackrey’s Hindutva.
