South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol stated in an interview with Reuters on Tuesday about the incursion of N.Korean drones into the mainland and criticized its own military over a lack of unpreparedness to attack.
President Yoon visibly fired on its military as they were unable to destroy a single drone that intruded into the country. However, the military triggered warning alarms and initiated a series of gunshots from a helicopter using machine guns while they were crossing from major cities including Seoul.
He expressed concerns about its air defence capability and military preparedness after the recent incident and declared his intention to form a separate drone unit as soon as possible to monitor North Korean military activity with improved surveillance in all parts of the country using stealthy drones.
Though the proposal was formed in recent cabinet meetings, it become necessary to act immediately to counter the attacks made by the north. It was the first time since 2017 that drones infiltrated South Korean airspace.
North Korean attacks on South Korea:
For the past few months, North Korea has test-fired many ballistic missiles toward the S.Korean borders to counter the U.S. and South Korean alliance. North Korean President Kim Jong-Un explicitly stated that the recent launches are in response to the joint military exercises done by the United States of America and South Korea.
The recent attacks mean the violation of the Panmunjeom declaration made by both countries for peace and Prosperity of the Korean Peninsula in 2018. However, the war between the two nations has never ended officially.
As per the declaration, both parties agreed to maintain cooperation at all levels for unity and peace, agreed to hold ministerial meetings in order to solve military issues and to carry out disarmament in a phased manner.
Pyongyang opposed the agreements and military drills of S.Korea with the U.S. and started to provoke military drills, and nuclear tests and fired ballistic missiles around the border areas. The recent intrusion of drones would escalate the tensions between both countries.
