The recent increase in Omicron cases represents the country’s “last biggest challenge,” revealed South Korea’s top health official, Sohn Young-Rae, a top health in a press briefing.
The government projected caseloads in this range, he explained, adding that they believed they were approaching the Omicron wave’s apex.
“By overcoming this crisis, we will be one step closer to normalcy,” he continued.
According to WHO data, South Korea leads the world in newly reported cases in the last seven days, with 2,358,878 cases, followed by Vietnam with 1,795,380 cases. The vast majority of South Korea’s eligible population has been vaccinated and boosted, and despite this, country’s 52 million people experiencing a record number of illnesses, death rates remain fairly low.
Numerous nations in Asia and Europe — the two continents hardest impacted — are reporting a spike in daily cases as Omicron and its stealth form spread through huge swaths of the population, most notably among the unvaccinated.
Daily Covid numbers continue to rise past the six-figure level from South Korea to Germany, despite a pandemic-weary world hoping for a long-awaited return to pre-Covid normal.
The spike in Asia and Europe has caused the Centre to issue a cautionary statement, with Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya ordering officials to maintain a high degree of readiness and surveillance.
