Conservative PM Contender Penny Mordaunt has called for an end to toxic politics. The focus should instead be on electing a new Prime Minister, she said. Mordaunt is one of the fives candidates in the Prime ministerial race in the UK. The other four candidates are Rishi Sunak, Tom Tugendhat and Liz Truss. These five candidates are to participate in a TV debate on Sunday evening. Meanwhile, Ms Mordaunt criticised claims that she had backed gender identification for Trans people. “ There were a number of smears going on in the papers”, she said to BBC.
Cost of Living Crisis a Priority: Penny Mordaunt
Ms Mordaunt particularly stressed on the recent cost of living crisis in the UK as her top priority. Currently, the rise in fuel prices after the Russian invasion of Ukraine has created inflation in there. Prices of commodities have risen and the Bank of England fears the UK heading towards a recession. In such a scenario, Penny Mordaunt claims to keep the crisis as her “top priority”.
Her interviewer also asked Ms Mordaunt as of her stance toward gender affirmative treatment. Sophie Raworth asked her whether trans people should medically diagnose themselves with “gender dysphoria” before transitioning, and she said yes. Her statement came after the Times had published an article about her previous support for gender affirmative treatment. During her stint as an Equalities Minister, Mordaunt had supported watering down the legal process of medical transitioning. Ms Mordaunt’s previous “woke” stance has attracted criticism within the Conservative party. However, she wishes to brush off the criticism and focus on other issues.
“We all know what’s going on. This is the type of toxic politics that people want to get away from. The poor British public has a month of this to go, they’ve got a month of us choosing our Prime Minister. It’s an opportunity for our party to show ourselves at our best. We should be talking and focusing on issues that concern them,” Ms Mordaunt said.
