Suella Braverman on October 25, was appointed to the position of Home Secretary by the United Kingdom’s first Prime Minister of Indian heritage, Rishi Sunak. The appointment came as a shock, which has upset many of the politicians of Britain, gathering criticism.
Braverman, previous week only handed over her resignation from Liz Truss Cabinet, over what is being called “technical breach of the administration rules”.
The amusement here lies despite the fact both being from the Conservative Party, Braverman, just a few days back endorsed Sunak’s ability as the next UK Prime Minister, but she is the one who opposed him when the contest was Liz Truss vs Rishi Sunak. Is this the hypocrisy of the Braverman or genuine realisation? No one yet knows what actually made Braverman’s mind change for Sunak, and why Rishi Sunak appointed her in his Cabinet and that too at such an influential-senior ministry.
On the other hand, UK politicians are saying that reinstating Braverman is a mistake and that PM Sunak is just ‘concerned’ about his party, not the country. Twitter is filled with criticism for Sunak over this decision not only from politicians but from other high-position dignitaries.
Chris Bryant, Labour MP for the Rhondda, wrote, “Appointing Suella Braverman as – Home secretary just days after she was sacked for a security breach does not smack of integrity, competence, professionalism or sensible politics. It is just cynical manoeuvring. This PM’s no better than the previous two”.
“I predict a rapid self-combustion of Suella Braverman, yet again proving that today’s carousel of chaos is no better than last week’s shower of shenanigans”, he then added.
Labour MP for Normanton, Pontefract, Castleford & Knottingley, Yvette Cooper, noted down, “At noon Rishi Sunak promised “integrity, professionalism & accountability. At 5 pm he made Suella Braverman as the UK Home Secretary, 1week after she resigned for Ministerial Code breach/security lapse. He put the party before the country. Security is too important for this irresponsible Tory chaos”.
Cooper, today while speaking on the same matter in the Parliament, said, “Is she such a novice that she didn’t know exactly what she was doing… because she was tired… there are suggestions, while she was AG, she was investigated for a leak… relating to the security service”.
Meanwhile, Caroline Lucas, Member of the Parliament, soon after the announcement of appointment, tweeted, “Rishi Sunak at lunchtime: “This government will have integrity, professionalism and accountability at every level”
Rishi Sunak in afternoon: Re-appoints Suella Braverman as Home Secretary, after breaching official ministerial rules and “dreaming” of deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda”.
One of the reputed lawyers, Peter Stefanovic, shared one of the clips, noting, “Just six days ago Suella Braverman resigned as Home Secretary after breaching the ministerial code in a security breach. Today she’s back in the Home Office. Here is a reminder of her toxic cruelty. BE AFRAID”.
“If Sunak’s pitch is ‘trust me’, then appointing: Suella Braverman- sacked six days ago; Gavin Williamson- sacked for leaking and Robert Jenrick sacked following Desmond Gate is a very ‘brave’ (insane) way to demonstrate it”, tweeted, Labour MP for Chesterfield, Shadow Minister.
Labour MP for Sefton Central, Shadow Minister for Business and Industry, Bill Esterson, stated, “6 days ago Suella Braverman was a security risk and was sacked as Home Secretary. Today she’s reappointed as Home Secretary. What does this say about Rishi Sunak’s judgement?”.
Aforementioned are just a few instances of the backlash UK’s newly-appointed PM Sunak is facing. Many of the scholars are even calling the decision and the new administration as ‘absolute joke’ after the appointment. Will this criticism once again follow the removal of Braverman from the government? But the main question which British people are seeking is, Is this decision of PM Sunak – right?
Speaking just after her appointment, Braverman pledged to work hard on border issues, maintain security and keep the streets of the country safe.
While today, providing information on the raising of the crucial matters before his new Cabinet, Sunak tweeted, “This morning I set out to the Cabinet the enormous task we face, and why I am confident that this government can rise to the challenge and deliver for the whole United Kingdom. Now is the time to get to work and earn the trust of the British people”.
