Reliance to acquire the franchise
Reliance has set its caps on acquiring a South African franchise in the upcoming South Africa T20 cricket league.
The franchise based in Cape Town comes close on heels with the announcement of Reliance industries to acquire another team. They are planning to buy a team in the international cricket league based in the United Arab Emirates.
Because of the recent successful bidding, Reliance industries are set to own three teams in cricket.
More on South Africa’s T20 cricket league:
The league is set to be organized from January to February in the coming year. Cricket South Africa has announced that around twenty-nine entities. They had come to bid for teams from around the world.
Cricket South Africa as well as broadcasters Star Sports are major shareholders in this new league.
While Reliance won the rights to a team based on Newlands in Cape Town, Chennai Super Kings acquired a team based in Johannesburg.
Delhi Capitals are not behind in the race because they too will have a team in Centurion. Lucknow Supergiants will own a team in Durban and Rajasthan Royals in Paarl. Sunrisers Hyderabad will buy a team in Port Elizabeth.
Cricket South Africa is happy to have these franchises onboard because they have “deep cricketing expertise” and “extensive experience in operating franchises.”
With the recent purchase, Reliance looks forward to furthering the Mumbai Indian brand. Reliance Industries has played a pivotal role in augmenting sports. It has done it through ownership of football leagues in India, cricket franchises, consultancy, sports sponsorship, and athlete talent management.
South Africa recently withdrew from an international series in Australia due to the clashing of dates of that match and their league.
It was scheduled as a World Cup Super League match for the forthcoming World Cup.
This puts an already fragile South Africa in danger of qualifying for the World Cups. They occupy the eleventh position in the points table.
