The author of ‘Lajja’ and also a Bangladeshi activist, Taslima Nasreen recently appreciated and lauded the Iranian women over their protest on the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. She said women around the world will gain courage from their acts.
What happens in Iran?
Mahsa Amini was arrested earlier this week, fell into a coma on Friday, and later died. As per media reports, she had a heart attack after getting detained by the morality police when they found a default in her hijab. A surge of protests has erupted across Iran following her death. Women are cutting their hair and burning up their hijabs.
Taslima Nasreen later added that the hijab is not a choice and most women wear it out of fear, pressure, and obligation which is often forced by their parents and other several family members. She also said that many are wearing it because they are brainwashed to do so.
When it was asked, to whom should the choice belong to, Nasreen said-
“People who want to wear hijab should have the right to do so. But, people who don’t want to should have the right to not wear hijab”.
She further added that many women are just wearing hijab because they are scared of getting beaten up. She says that the hijab is no more a religious outfit but a mere political one.
Taslima is happy and says that it is a beautiful scene where the Iranian women are burning up their hijabs and cutting their hair out of protest.
The Bangladeshi activist believes that it is very important for the world to see and witness such acts of heroism as the hijab is a symbol of oppression, suppression, and humiliation for women.
Taslima has never stopped herself from speaking on such difficult matters even if it lands her in trouble. She is widely known for writing on women’s oppression and criticism of religion.
