History of Tata Group of Industries Limited
Tata Motors began as a locomotive builder in 1945. After creating a joint venture with Daimler-Benz of Germany, the Tata Group entered the commercial vehicle industry in 1954. After years of dominating India’s retail vehicle industry, Tata Motors entered the passenger car market in 1991 with the Tata Sierra, a sport utility vehicle built on the Tata Mobile platform. Tata then introduced the Tata Estate (1992), a station waggon based on the previous Tata Mobile, the Tata Sumo (1994), a 5-door SUV, and the Tata Safari (1998).
Tata introduced the Indica in 1998, an indigenous Indian passenger automobile designed to meet the demands of Indian consumers but styled by I.D.E.A, Italy. Despite early criticism from auto critics, its outstanding fuel efficiency, strong engine, and aggressive marketing approach helped it become one of the best-selling cars in Indian automobile history.
A newer version of the automobile, known as the Indica V2, was a significant upgrade over the previous model and rapidly became a popular choice. Tata Motors also exported a large number of the vehicle to South Africa. The success of Indica was critical to Tata Motors’ expansion.
