A Tornado wreaked havoc on the Texas town of Matador on Wednesday, resulting in the tragic deaths of four people and leaving ten others injured.
Matador is a small town situated approximately 70 miles Northeast of Lubbock and has a small population residing in the town. Amidst the powerful storming across the Central and Western US, a tornado emerged, adding to a total of at least 11 tornado reports across the region. Among these, three windstorms were documented in Texas, six in Colorado, one in Nebraska and one in Wyoming.
Tornado related casualties
One of the casualties involved an elderly woman who lost her life tragically inside her residence. The town of Matador also encountered an unparalleled tornado that inflicted destructive winds upon the area. The aftermath revealed four confirmed fatalities and a total of ten injuries, with seven of the individuals transported by EMS and three by personal vehicles.
The storm wreaked upon Grundy’s home, and completely demolished it by leaving her without her necessary medication and clothing. Further, a significant number of livestock that was maintained by her on her property were either perished or scattered due to the impact of the disaster.
As a result of the havoc, a minimum of 20 residences and businesses have been devastated and authorities also anticipate on obtaining additional information as the daylight hours unfold.
Tornado’s whereabouts
Matador has been plunged into darkness as power has been disrupted due to the occurrence of the tornado. As of early Thursday, the town remained out of power, leaving more than 500 residences and commercial establishments in Motley County impacted by the outage.
Post tornado-related conditions persist on Thursday by posing a potential threat to more than 42 million people across a vast region stretching across Wyoming to Texas, as well as areas of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. The substantial population of these locations also finds itself under at least a marginal risk of encountering sever weather conditions in the upcoming days.
In the town of Matador, the procedure of cleaning has begun, with TxDOT mobilizing the heavy equipment for clearing away the debris.
The city authorities also express optimism about restoring electricity by Friday evening or even Saturday morning, despite being without power on Thursday afternoon.
Other tornado damages
In Texas last week, a tornado of EF3 intensity, struck Perryton, a city located almost 160 miles North of Matador, with peak winds reaching 140 mph. The tornado claimed the lives of three individuals, leaving dozens more injured.
Severe storms further swept across the area and caused almost 100 individuals attending a concert at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre near Denver on Wednesday evening to sustain injuries from the storming of the hail.
The weather service also issued a tornado warning encompassing eastern Kent and western Stonewall counties, as the storm’s approach towards Jayton. The warning was further accompanied by reports from the weather service of the sizeable hail as well as a confirmed wind gust of 100 mph in the Jayton vicinity.
