The incident occurred around 8 am today at Earth Vivi Road near Sai Baba Compound in Thane. Also, there were no employees at the time of the fire. According to city officials, the fire burned about 1,800 to 2,200 square feet of godown, and heavy smoke swallowed the entire site. Three fire trucks were immediately deployed.
Rajesh Pawar of the Bhiwandi Fire Department said: “I received a phone call around 8:30 am and three fire trucks were dispatched to the scene. The fire was extinguished within 3 hours and cooling work began. ” He added that the cause of the fire is still unknown.Â
The blaze erupted around 5 am in the ground-plus-two-story godown located at Walgaon in Bhiwandi town and the thick smoke soon engulfed the entire locality, he said.
Two fire engines and a jumbo water tanker were rushed to the spot, the official said, adding that efforts were still on to control the blaze.
The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, he said.
