Turkey’s Presidential spokesman believes that the world cannot turn their backs on Russia as, the foremost priority must be to stop the war.
Turkey, a NATO member issued a statement on Sunday that the world must negotiate with Russia instead of isolating it. However, Turkey holds good relations with both Ukraine and Russia, and Turkey’s President condemned the outrageous act of Russia. But, it did not approve of turning its back on any of the side.
Being a NATO member, Turkey will also be obliged to follow NATO’s decisions. But, right now the country has decided not to choose any side.
Presidential spokesperson, Ibrahim Kalin told the International forum that, “If the world burns bridges with Russia then who is going to talk to them at the end of the day. It is our topmost priority to help Ukrainians get the support they need to defend themselves. But, Russia must get a chance to justify itself, so that its grievances could be understood if not justified.”
Turkey backs Russia to help lift some sanctions?
Turkey opposes Russia’s attack on Ukraine, but doesn’t support west’s sanctions on Russia. Turkey has not joined west with imposing sanctions neither on Russia nor on its entities.
Last year in December, Turkey’s economy faced a minor currency crisis. Thus, Turkey relies heavily on Russian energy, trade and tourism. Further, since Feb 24, when the war broke out, many Russians have fled to Turkey in search of a safe haven from the sanctions.
Moreover, Turkey’s investment officer, Ahmet Burak Daglioglu informed the international forum about some Russian companies that are relocating in Turkey.
When asked about Turkey continuing business with Russia which could benefit Vladimir Putin, Turkey spokesperson said, “We are not targeting, we are not chasing, and we are not pursuing any investment or capital that has a question mark on it.”
In addition to this, 2 superyachts linked to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich is docked in Turkish resorts. Most importantly, Abramovich is among the several Russian Billionaires which are under Western sanctions, as a result of Russian invasion in Ukraine.
