This evening, not only did Wardlow get new theme music, but Mr. Mayhem also advanced in the organization with his first Championship Title. Wardlow defeated Scorpio Sky in the first round of the program to become the new TNT Champion.
The bout didn’t last long, as Wardlow won despite a low blow from Sky, interference by Dan Lambert, and lots of other heel tactics from the former TNT Champ. The two guys are competing for the TNT Championship for the second time. Wardlow’s arch-nemesis MJF intervened in the bout and helped Sky win the first time they met. Sky had no chance of escaping his destiny or the powerbomb symphony since this was a street brawl.
Wardlow first appeared in AEW during 2019 All Out pay-per-view, when a video package previewing his debut played. He made his debut appearance in person on the November 13, 2019, edition of “Dynamite,” assaulting Cody Rhodes and allying himself with MJF as his bodyguard. On February 19, 2020, he competed in his first official AEW match. He lost to Cody Rhodes in a steel cage match in the main event of AEW’s Atlanta, GA premiere.
Wardlow’s reputation skyrocketed in recent months when he defeated his old employer, Maxwell Jacob Friedman, at Double or Nothing on May 29. The two had a slow-burning animosity in which MJF humiliated his bodyguard multiple times. Wardlow eventually spoke out and turned the tables on Friedman by helping in his defeat to CM Punk in a dog collar match at AEW Revolution. Since his impassioned pipebomb promo on the June 1 AEW “Dynamite,” MJF has been absolutely absent from AEW television.
