US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has stressed Washington’s strong support for Sweden and Finland’s quick NATO accession, even as his Turkish counterpart stressed the need for more concrete action on the part of the Nordic countries.
Speaking at a joint press conference after meeting Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in Ankara, Blinken stated that the Nordic countries have acted upon the conditions set by Turkey in June last year when it agreed to lift its veto for Sweden and Finland on joining the US-led military alliance.
The US’s top diplomat, who is on his first trip to Turkey since his appointment two years ago, said NATO’s Nordic expansion issue was not a bilateral one with Ankara and that Washington supported their accession into the alliance “as quickly as possible”.
The negotiation between the countries has been going on for quite some time. But Turkey has been careful in rectifying the deal. Right now, turkey and Hungary are the only two countries that haven’t ratified the agreement.
Finland and Sweden are eager to join

The article 5 defense pact says that an attack against one country means protection from the rest. Smaller countries like Finland require this and Sweden needs security in times of living.
Finland shares a land boundary with Russia. Therefore, they have a direct threat. On the other hand, Sweden shares a maritime boundary.
The countries need the ratification of the 30 member countries in their application to become official members. While the other members have been welcoming Sweden and Finland to join.
The countries joining will benefit both parties. Sweden and Finland will increase their military capability. And will provide much security from Russia’s aggression.
Why Turkey isn’t ratifying Sweden to join.
