The six-party alliance came together with the presidential candidate to fight in the upcoming presidential election. This is shocking for the divided opposition parties of Turkey to come together for the 2024 Turkey election.
The upcoming national election will be held on May 14, 2024. Till the last minute, there were disagreements over the face of the opposition. But finally, they came together after some compromises with the name of, Kemal Kilicdaroglu.
Who is Kemal Kilicdaroglu?
74-year-old, Kemal Kilicdaroglu is chosen as the face of the opposition. Kilicdaroglu is popularly known as “Gandhi Kemal” or “Turkey’s Gandhi”. He is known to resemble the Indian freedom fighter, Mahatma Gandhi. He is a former civil servant and the opposite personality of President Erdogan.
Kemal Kilicdaroglu is the face of the Centre-Left Republican People’s Party (CHP) which is the country’s second-largest party.
The upcoming presidential election in Turkey is consequential. The latest polls suggest a tight race in the upcoming national election. There have been talks of Kemal Kilicdaroglu against Erdogan’s popularity.
The promises of the opposition
Opposition is all set to challenge the two-decades-long rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Erdogan has been criticized by the opposition for their authoritarian rule. In a public gathering, He was cheered by a vast crowd of people. He talked about following the path of democracy and the constitution.Â
The country has been witnessing an economic crisis. Last month, earthquakes have made the people of Turkey more vulnerable. The quake turned the whole country into debris. Loss of life, property, work, etc. the government was also criticized for corruption and the poor state of infrastructure in the country.Â
The opposition brought systematic promises to improve the situation of the country.
Constitutional reform in the Parliamentary system
Kemal Kilicdaroglu said, “we will govern the country the consensus”. The 2017 constitutional referendum transitioned the parliamentary system of the country. There was the transition of the position from the Prime minister to President. Erdogan gained additional powers after the referendum. The opposition promised to bring back the Prime minister position.
The president’s position will return to an impartial role with no political responsibility.
Reform in Economy planning
The opposition also promised to draft legislation on the bank’s mission, operational independence, and high-level appointments. The opposition also promises to change the policies on currency depreciation and Floating exchange rate. The alliance will also cut down the government expenditure on the number of Planes, and vehicles used by the presidency. They will also sell the state buildings.Â
They will review all the Public-Private partnerships, Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant Project, and natural gas contracts.Â
Foreign Policy of Turkey
The opposition also promised to bring “Peace at Home, Peace in the World” as the foreign policy of turkey. Turkey has faced a lot of criticism from the international community under Erdogan’s rule.
Turkey to re-establish their relationship with the USA with mutual trust.
They also tend to complete their Full membership with the European Union and review Turkey’s refugee deal.
They are also keen to keep the relationship with Russia with understanding and equal dialogue.
To keep the Independence of the Judiciary
The six-party alliance also promised to bring the Independence of the Judiciary and the appointments of the judges. They will also strengthen the Freedom of expression and the Right to Demonstrate (Protest) in the country.
