Russia Ukraine conflict:
Russia invaded Ukraine due to the latter’s increasing proximity with the West and NATO. The invasion is being seen as the worst of actions under the tenure of Putin. The west has persistently condemned such attacks and has taken strict actions against Russia by putting sanctions on them. However, the world especially Europe and the US have struggled due to these sanctions the most, because fuel is what Russia gave to them. It is the result of this invasion that the world saw Sri Lanka kneel and its citizens fall!
However, unwary of the consequences, Russia continues to hold Ukraine by its neck and in a series of such attempts, Russia has been shelling nuclear power plants in Ukraine, as per the reports.
Ex-PM of Portuguese hinted at a nuclear war:
Antonio Guterres has hinted that the threat of nuclear confrontation has returned after decades. The ex-Portuguese Prime Minister also called on nuclear states to commit to no first use of the weapons.
However, Guterres went on to claim any attack on a nuclear plant is a “suicidal thing.” His remarks came after it had been reported Russia had renewed efforts to shell the Zaporizhzhia facility in Ukraine.
Guterres also made the comments after attending the Hiroshima Peace Memorial on Saturday to mark the 77th anniversary of the world’s first atomic bombing which hit the Japanese city at the end of the Second World War.
During his visit to Tokyo, the UN’s secretary-general urged Japan to halt public and private financing of coal projects in a bid to curb fossil fuel emissions. But reported attacks against Zaporizhzhia, which is supposedly the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, sparked outrage.
Volodymyr Zelensky comments:
Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky said Saturday’s shelling constituted “Russian nuclear terror”. He added, “There is no such nation in the world that could feel safe when a terrorist state fires at a nuclear plant.”
However, the Kremlin has rejected Kyiv’s claim. They have instead claimed Ukraine hit the site with a multiple rocket launcher. The Ministry of Defence has also warned the Kremlin’s intentions regarding its power plant attack remain “unclear”.
In an intelligence update released on August 5, the MoD said, “Following five months of occupation, Russia’s intentions regarding the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant remain unclear. However, the actions they have undertaken at the facility have likely undermined the security and safety of the plant’s normal operations.”
Russian forces are operating in the regions adjacent to the power station:
Further adding, “Russian forces are probably operating in the regions adjacent to the power station and have used artillery units based in these areas to target Ukrainian territory on the western bank of the Dnipro river. Russian forces have probably used the wider facility area, in particular the adjacent city of Enerhodar, to rest their forces, utilizing the protected status of the nuclear power plant to reduce the risk to their equipment and personnel from overnight Ukrainian attacks.”
What may become of the world is not known, but in a fit to subjugate other nations and depict superiority, Russia has massacred many, whereas the West is often known for shrewd politics and brutal consequences are planning to lift sanctions in lieu of the coming winter.
Steps were taken by Canada:
In a series of discussions recently, Canada has sent a turbine to Russia, keeping aside their relationship with the US and NATO. Moreover, as a matter of fact, Trudeau or any other leader cannot be held for taking care of their citizens!
However, India has time and again been put to question on its close ties with the Kremlin. If this is not hypocrisy then what is? Many such questions remain unanswered, however, the US continues to uphold sanctions despite rising inflation in the country.
In a democracy or in any government, what exactly is the duty of the leader, if it is not to work for its people rather than for a self-proclaimed agenda? The leaders of the world are missing the keynote, but it is the citizens that will pay!
