Every year on July 26th, India observes Kargil Vijay Diwas, also known as Kargil Victory Day, to commemorate the nation’s triumph in the 1999 conflict with Pakistan. This significant day pays homage to the courage and sacrifices of the Indian soldiers who fought during the intense and prolonged Kargil War. On this day, the nation comes together to honor the memory of those who gave their all for their country, especially the four exceptional Kargil War heroes who were awarded the Param Vir Chakra, the highest gallantry award in India, for their extraordinary valor and selflessness.

 The Kargil War of 1999 was a landmark conflict between India and Pakistan, fought in the inhospitable terrain of the Kargil region in Jammu and Kashmir.  Captain Vikram Batra, belonging to the 13th Battalion, Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, was a remarkable officer known for his fearlessness and charisma. During the Kargil War, he played a pivotal role in the recapture of Point 5140, which had been codenamed ‘Point 4875’, in the treacherous Dras sector. He fearlessly led his troops in a daring assault and succeeded in seizing the strategic peak from the enemy’s clutches.

 One of Captain Batra’s most memorable moments during the war was when he captured Point 5140. He famously exclaimed, “Yeh Dil Maange More!” (This heart craves more!) after achieving the victory. His words and actions resonated with the entire nation, inspiring soldiers and civilians alike. His leadership and unyielding valor earned him the Param Vir Chakra posthumously as he sacrificed for his country.

 Rifleman Sanjay Kumar, PVC

 Rifleman Sanjay Kumar, a member of the 13th Battalion, Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, displayed exceptional courage and determination during the Kargil War. He played a crucial role in capturing several strategic enemy positions despite facing heavy fire from the enemy. One of his most significant contributions was the recapture of a vital point at the staggering height of 16,000 feet.

 Kumar’s valorous actions not only bolstered the morale of his comrades but also served as a shining example of selfless dedication to the nation. His unwavering commitment to the cause and relentless efforts to secure victory earned him the esteemed Param Vir Chakra, making him an epitome of courage and sacrifice.

 Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav, PVC

Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav, a member of the 18 Grenadiers Regiment, displayed unmatched courage during the Kargil War. He played a critical role in the capture of Tiger Hill, a steep and heavily fortified enemy position. Despite being injured multiple times during the operation, Yadav refused to back down, demonstrating extraordinary courage and leadership in the face of intense enemy resistance.

 His indomitable spirit and determination to accomplish the mission at all costs earned him the Param Vir Chakra. His actions on the battlefield continue to inspire and instill a sense of pride in every Indian. Yadav’s story of bravery reminds us that true heroes are those who rise above adversity and fight for the greater good.

 Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey, PVC

 Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey, an officer in the 1/11 Gorkha Rifles, was a gallant leader who fearlessly led his men during the Battle of Khalubar in the Batalik sector. With remarkable tactical acumen and exceptional courage, he spearheaded the assault and played a crucial role in capturing enemy positions.

 During the intense battle, Pandey suffered fatal injuries and made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. His unwavering commitment to the safety of his comrades and the success of the mission earned him the Param Vir Chakra posthumously. Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey’s legacy of bravery and leadership continues to inspire generations of soldiers and civilians alike.

 The Param Vir Chakra, awarded to these four heroes, serves as a testament to their extraordinary courage and dedication to the country. These brave soldiers exemplify the highest qualities of valor, self-sacrifice, and leadership. Their acts of heroism in the face of adversity continue to be remembered and revered by the nation.
