President Biden urged Congress to approve the cash for military help. While in Kyiv, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres asked Russia to assist war crimes investigators.

President Joe Biden requested an additional $33 billion from Congress on Thursday to assist Ukraine in repelling Russia’s invasion, signaling that the US is prepared to wage a sustained, long-term campaign to bolster Kyiv and weaken Moscow as the bloody war enters its third month with no sign of abating.
Biden’s most recent plan — which the White House claimed was intended to cover Ukraine’s demands for five months — includes more than $20 billion in military assistance for Kyiv and defence bolstering in neighbouring nations. Additionally, there is $8.5 billion in economic assistance to assist Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s government and $3 billion in food and humanitarian assistance to people, including the nearly five million refugees caused by the war.
The support package, which is now being considered by Congress, would be more than double the size of the first $13.6 billion in defence and economic assistance for Ukraine and Western allies that Congress approved last month and is now nearly depleted. It was intended to convey that the US is not done assisting in thwarting Russian President Vladimir Putin’s efforts to expand his country’s influence over its neighbour, and maybe beyond.

“This war will not be cheap, but capitulating to aggression will be more costly,” Biden added. “It is vital that this financing is granted expeditiously.” The proposal comes as combat in eastern and southern areas of the country continues to intensify and international tensions rise as Russia shuts off gas supplies to two NATO members, Poland and Bulgaria.
Biden said that the US will try to meet the energy requirements of its friends, stating, “We will not allow Russia to bully or blackmail its way out of the sanctions.”
