Famous Bengali director Tarun Majumdar took his last breath in a government hospital on Monday morning. He was 91.
The notable veteran director passed away in a state-run hospital on Monday morning in Kolkata. He was aged 91.
He was afflicted with kidney-related ailments for a very long time and was taken and admitted to the hospital on 14th June. On Saturday night, his health condition rapidly deteriorated, and the doctors put him on ventilator support. He passed away at 11.15 am.
The director was awarded the Padma Shri in 1990. He was awarded four National Awards and a total of five Filmfare Awards which included the Lifetime Achievement Award in the year 2021.
His last wish was to donate his body for medical research purposes. Accordingly, his body was donated by his family members to the state-operated SSKM Hospital for research and education in medicine. His body was taken to the NT1 studio located in Tollygunge in south Kolkata where it was kept for some time for people to pay their last respects to the legendary director. His body was then taken to the SSKM hospital where his body was donated to the anatomy department of the hospital. His wish of not being adorned with any garlands or wreaths was maintained. Hence, there was no arrangement of a funeral, rally, or gun salute.
Several notable personalities such as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, and other directors and veteran actors expressed their grief over the unfortunate demise of the veteran director.
The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee considered his demise a huge loss to the film industry.
Remembering him, notable filmmaker Goutam Ghose said that he was completely heartbroken and that he knew him personally for 40 years. He emphasized how meticulous the director was.
Mithun Chakraborty recollected how he watch the director’s movie ‘Balika Badhu’ 18 times and regarded him as the undisputed king of the film industry.
Debasree Roy fondly remembered how the director shaped her up to be an actress and said that by losing him, she lost her father.
