Just take a look at the representation of vintage clothing on red carpets this award season to see that what’s old is fresh again. At the BAFTAs, NAACP Image Awards, Oscars, and other events, celebrities including Hunter Schafer, Zendaya, Cate Blanchett, and others showcased vintage clothing on the red carpet. Versace, Jean Paul Gaultier, Dior, and other contemporary designers created a lot of dresses and ensembles. 1995-2005 is a particularly well-liked time period (which, coincidentally, encompasses some of the years Gen-Zers were born.)
The looks feel strikingly current. Consider Olivia Rodrigo as an illustration. On the red carpet, the pop diva donned horse-printed Chloé pants from Stella McCartney’s time as the brand’s creative director with the assistance of stylist Danielle Goldberg. Amazingly, the pants, with their flared legs and low-slung waists, fall into several categories on the trendiness scale. Whereas Zendaya, Dua Lipa, and Bella Hadid have all attended events in vintage Versace, specifically the 1990s. Its excellent fashion demands that it be worn twice.
And then there is Cate Blanchett, who has created entirely new outfits out of previously worn items as well as worn them on the red carpet. Recycled lace from the Armani workshops is used for a new gown, while an Alexander McQueen dress is transformed into a fitting top. Blanchett demonstrates how various and numerous methods can be found to use antique clothing.

Old is gold
When someone wears vintage, they sort of say: I’m an individual here. This is what I’m wearing because I adore how it looks on me. It doesn’t matter to me that it isn’t supported by anyone. In a society where everything is labelled, many individuals find that to be more genuine. Editor’s Choice
Consider the 1950s Dior dress Reese Witherspoon wore to the Academy Awards in 2006 or Julia Roberts defying Oscar’s fashion conventions by showing up at the 2001 ceremony (I had written about it in detail in my previous article called ‘Black Rules the Red Carpet at the Oscars 23′) in a 1992 Valentino. Antique clothing has long had a place on the red carpet.
Vintage appeals to the expanding need for sustainability in the fashion industry. Why create a brand-new garment when there are so many wonderful ones just ready to be worn again? Moreover, the appearance should not be too retro.
Relevance of vintage fashion on red carpet
It might be claimed that the red carpet promotes sustainability regardless of how old an item is as long as it isn’t brand-new and made just for that occasion. With this in mind, whether or not we want to call it vintage, there does seem to have been a shift towards more celebrities choosing to wear something that is at least a few seasons old, rather than custom or fresh off the runway. But why the change in approach?
Sustainability is a clear response. Fashion’s environmental impact is now well recognised. Designers, stylists, editors, celebrities, influencers, and even customers are painfully aware of how much the fashion business contributes to global warming, which has caused many of us to reevaluate our habits. And while there is a lot of misinformation, uncertainty, and greenwashing surrounding which new clothing is appropriate to purchase, one widely held idea is that shopping secondhand is an undeniably beneficial approach to reducing our impact on the environment. As a result, celebrities are wearing antique attire on the red carpet to encourage sustainability rather than merely making a fashion statement.
