Daniel Vettori, Former New Zealand captain, says that the option for captaincy is right in front of them as he suggested Glen Maxwell as the potential captain of RCB for the IPL 2022 season.
With Virat Kohli stepping down as captain of the RCB squad after the IPL 2021 season due to his workload in international cricket, the spot for captaincy needs to be filled. And with the Indian Premier League 2022 auctions coming up, in the subsequent week, speculations have begun regarding the potential captains for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Punjab Super Kings (PBKS).
Being the only three teams who have not announced their captains yet, eyes are all fixed on their top picks for the season.
In this regard, Daniel Vettori, the former New Zealand Captain, suggested Glenn Maxwell as his choice for captaincy in the team. He says that the option is right in front of the franchise. “I think Maxwell was retained with the view that he’s a potential captaincy option. He’s done a good job with the Melbourne Stars.
He’s been energetic, he’s probably been in many ways similar to Kohli, probably not quite to the same level of enthusiasm. But I think he’s a guy who has led from the front,” he said while he was giving an interview to ESPNcricinfo.
Moving forward, Vettori mentions the name after commending Maxwell’s performance in the last season. In the previous season, Maxwell was purchased by RCB with a massive sum of 14.25 crores. He played a significant role in leading the team to the playoffs with KKR.
Being an all-rounder cricketer, Maxwell also took three wickets in the season and was in contention for winning the orange cap with a whopping 513 runs in 15 matches and the highest score of the season being 78 runs. Daniel mentioned that the decision needs to be made after proper consultation with former captain Virat Kohli.
Fans and experts requested the RCB franchise to keep David Warner in the loop, who had a fallout with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) ahead of the auction last season. Warner was responsible for leading SRH to the IPL title in 2016. Daniel Vittori also said that Warner might be a good choice for captaincy in the remaining three teams for this season.
Another name that has come up in this regard is Shreyas Iyer. Although the young cricketer might be lacking on the batting front as of late, the impending leadership skills that he had portrayed in IPL 2021 has caught the eye of almost all the franchises.
Due to his effort and hustle, Delhi Capitals (DC) reached the playoffs for the first time since 2012. His base price was set at two crores, but he is expected to soften up the pockets of the franchises during the auction.
In this regard, former Indian Spinner Harbajan Singh believes that Virat Kohli might be the best option for RCB with new players coming up and that he would not be surprised if Kohli accepts the offer for continuing the captaincy for the next couple of years.
For this IPL auction, RCB is expected to have a pool of 57 crores to be spent on all the potential players, such as former West Indies Captain and premier all-rounder Jason Holder.
It is speculated that having Virat Kohli, Glen Maxwell, and Mohammad Siraj as retained players in the team, the franchise has set aside a considerable sum of 12 crores for Holder in this auction. This might tip the scales of winning the franchise trophy this season.
