In Russia, demand for virtual private networks (VPNs), which are a tool for circumventing regulations, has surged.Ā
Russia has restricted access to META’s key social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram in retaliation to last week’s META decision, which permits Ukrainian social media users to publish messages threatening violence like as ‘Death to the Russian Invaders.’Ā
Demand for Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) that encrypt data and hide a user’s location jumped 2,088 percent higher than the daily average demand in mid-February, according to statistics from monitoring firm Top10VPN.
203 news sites and 97 foreign exchange and crypto sites are now restricted in Russia, according to a data analysis of more than 6,000 entries in Russia’s central registration of blocked websites.Ā
The Russian government’s IT systems and infrastructure have been subjected to an increase in cyber-attacks since February 24, according to the state communications regulator Roskomnadzor.Ā
What is VPN?Ā
A virtual private network (VPN) extends a private network across a public network, allowing users to send and receive data as if their computer equipment were physically linked to the private network. Increased functionality, security, and control of the private network are all advantages of using a VPN.
It is typically used by remote workers to gain access to resources that are not available on the public network. Although encryption is widespread, it is not a requirement of a VPN connection.
