More than 100 mercenaries of the Russia-linked Wagner group that were closer to the Belarus border, have now started marching towards the Polish border, said the Polish Prime Minister Matseuz Moraweicki. He spoke during a visit to Gilwice (South Poland), at an arms factory where special tanks called Leopard are getting repaired for the Ukraine army.
At a recent press conference held by the Polish Prime Minister Matsuez Moraweicki, expressed his concern over the Wagner mercenaries approaching closer towards the Polish border. The mercenaries have reached the Suwalki Gap, a territory of the Polish land positioned between Belarus and Kaliningrad that is a Russian territory distinguished away from the land. Being a member of both the European Union and NATO, Poland is in a highly insecure border plain to its east.
The fear over their arrival amplified after the Wagner group rushed towards the Belarus border. It is an added problem to Poland considering the increase in immigrants in the Polish- Belarus border from the Middle East and Africa. These immigrants attempt to enter the Polish borders as well as Lithuania. Allegedly, over 16.000 immigrants have attempted to enter the Belarus-Poland border this year itself.
The Polish government has repeatedly accused Russia and Belarus for destabilizing the political and safety conditions of its country. It has been deemed as a form of warfare on the Russian-Belarus plain and has been rattled strategically through building a long, high wall over the border. Currently the Wagner mercenaries are near the Belarusian city- Grodno, situated near the Polish border.
Matsuez termed the probable invasion as “hybrid warfare” after the Wagner chief Yevgany Prigozhin retreated from the Russian territory. Expressing fears over impending dangers in the country, the PM is strongly guessing that the Wagner group might enter camouflaging as Belarusian border guards and facilitate illegal immigrants to cause political tensions. While the PM did not reveal the source of his information, he seemed confident over the accusation.
This statement by Matsuez Moraweicki follows after Warsaw’s interior minister ,on Thursday, declared that Poland, Lithuania and Latvia could probably shut their borders collectively in case the group tries to enter their land. Warsaw has also hinted towards the possible spread of the Ukraine war in Poland as well.
Earlier this month, after Belarusian President Lukashenko reported that the Mercenaries were approaching Poland, the Polish Defence Minister, Mariusz Blaszczak informed its citizens that over 1000 soldiers and 200 units of equipment, have begun moving towards the country’s eastern borders. These equipment are said to be taken from the 12th and 17th Mechanized Brigades.
