Veteran opening Batsman Wasim Jaffer desires young debutant, Yashasvi Jaiswal to open in the 20 overs format ahead of the current wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan.
Jaffer spoke after India’s loss against West Indies in the first T20 where men in Blues fell short by four runs while chasing a decent score of 150. Ishan who opened the innings with Gujarat star Shubman Gill took an early exit by scoring only six runs.
Jaffer said that “he wants to see Yashasvi Jaiswal as an opening batsman instead of Ishan Kishan, he further stated that Ishan’s T20 worries him”.
The reason stated was that Ishan Kishan hasn’t even scored a 40 in the last 15 innings and his strike rate is also very low. However, the wicketkeeper-batsman has good stats in ODI but the 20-over format is different.
While talking to ESPNCricinfo, Jaffer stated that Ishan had a very ordinary Indian Premier League(IPL) season.
The former opening batsman also mentioned Jaiswal’s last IPL season form, where he scored two 100s in one season.
He affirmed that why not give a chance to the player who played exceptionally well in the IPL 2024? The Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener also received the emerging player of the season award.
He added that he would definitely look towards making this change.
The Young man Jaiswal scored 625 runs in the last IPL season with an excellent strike rate of 148 and an impeccable average of 48 but unfortunately, RR took exit from the league stage games of IPL.
While Mumbai’s Ishan had a decent season where he scored 254 runs in 16 games with an average of 30 runs.
While talking about the first T20 loss Jaffer also stated that the contest was being played on a difficult pitch so he did not expect the Indian openers at the same pace.
He stated that the first match was played on a difficult pitch, so expecting Shubman and Ishan to play freely would have been a huge expectation.
The pitch will play a huge role in the second T20 said Jaffer. The second contest between both teams will be played at the same venue on Sunday, August 6. Wasim believes that if the pitch is good then our batters will also perform well.
The second game of the five-match series will start at 8 PM Indian Standard Time(IST)
After suffering a minor margin loss in the first T20 Team India will be aiming to bounce back and level the series 1-1.
Tilak Verma making his t20 Debut in the first ODI played an impressive innings by smashing 39 runs just off 22 deliveries.
While West Indies keeper batsman Nicholas Pooran also played exceptional innings by scoring 41 runs.
However, team India kept losing wickets at regular intervals which led the batting side to collapse.
The Indian side is without their star Players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The decision was taken by BCCI to manage the workload of the players as they are heading towards Asia Cup in September and ODI World Cup in October.
The two-time inaugural champions West Indies are on a downfall as they did not qualify for the main ICC event in India for this year. The Caribbean side also faced defeat in an earlier test and ODI series against India.
