National award winning singer, Rupankar Bagchi received massive hate on social media. This happened after he did a Facebook Live criticizing Bengali fans’ obsession with KK hours before his demise.
The Bengali Vocalist saw trending videos of KK’s Day 2 performance at Nazrul Mancha on Tuesday(31st May). He told his fans to understand that the amount of money KK earns is a lot. A regional singer can’t even imagine earning that.
He compared himself and other Bengali singers to KK on his Facebook Live. He said, “Anupam Roy, Somalata, Eman Chakraborty, Raghav Chatterjee, Manomay Bhattachyra, Ujjaini Mukherjee, Cactus, Rupam Islam, Fossils, all have their videos on social media and after listening to the songs(by KK) I felt we all sing better than him, then why do you guys not feel so excited about us? KK, KK, KK, Who is K man?”
He went on to say that all the singers he mentioned are far better at any point of time than Mr. KK. He asked his fans to listen to artists from Odisha and the South as well. Concluding the video, he asked the people of Bengal to “become Bengali first.”
Consequences of the Live
Bagchi deleted the Facebook live from his timeline as the news came out of KK’s demise. By that time the video had gone viral and he was already facing a lot of hate.
Rupankar took to the Press to inform that his words were not meant for KK but was to ask the Bengali fans to be more aware of their own regional singers. The vocalist clarified that he meant to address the Bengali fanaticism of Bollywood as a whole when he mentioned KK’s name on Facebook live.
Bagchi received death threats online which forced his wife Chaitali to email Talah Police station a complaint. The complaint has been sent by the PS to court.
He has been facing immense hate online from KK fans. One of them tweeted, “Typical of chronic cynicism, inferiority complex from not being able to be up there, in performance, fan-following fame and money.”
Another tweet read, “If a singer cannot respect another singer, he does not deserve to be called an artist.”
