There have been undoubtedly loads of confusion going on around the vaccination of children in India. So far, India has allowed Zydus Cadila’s vaccine for children above 12 years old, and Pfizer’s double dose has been approved for 12 years in the US. Bharat Biotech, an Indian multinational biotechnology company, is now waiting for the approval of the Drugs Controller-General of India (DCGI) to roll out the Children’s Covid-19 vaccine.
Which age group of children is approved for the Covid-19 vaccination?
Currently, vaccination can be given to children above 12 years old, and there has been no green signal from the government as its side effects are not yet correctly identified. Hence, the vaccination for children below 12 years has not been approved yet, but as the researchers and clinical trials continue to go on, we will be notified sooner or later about it.
The main aim of vaccination is to protect the children and assure them a healthy and secure future. If that’s not secured, then there’s no means to take any action in that situation; that is why the government is concentrating more on the vaccine’s effectiveness and the side effects it causes after the jab has been transferred. As a result, it is taking longer than expected for the authorities to roll out the vaccination for the children. Still, with Bharat Biotech being confident about their new vaccine, it can soon change the situation for the better. Still, as of now, it waits for approval from the DCGI.
Do Children need vaccination?
The key reason for not vaccinating the younger groups is that the long-term side effects of Covid-19 on children are not yet discovered, which is the primary reason for not vaccinating them.
As per the health expert’s reports, there should be no urgency in the vaccination process of children as the number of Covid-19 cases is on a decline, and the maximum number of adults have been fully vaccinated.
Yes, they do, and they might not also; vaccination is essential to prevent the damages caused by the Covid-19 disease, but it should only be done when all the aspects of the vaccination suit the tenderness of the children and that they potentially do not possess any kind of threat to them and the reason they wouldn’t require it, is because we are witnessing a decline in the number of Covid-19 cases each day, which becomes the ultimate reason of not vaccinating them.
Dr Gagandeep Kang, the vaccine expert, and professor at the Welcome Trust Research Laboratory, Christian Medical College (Vellore), stated that there are many unanswered questions that India needs to deliberate on before it starts with the vaccination campaign for children below 12 years of age. She threw light on the fact that before making any decisions in this direction, “there should be clarity on why we want to vaccinate children and with which vaccine”.
Also, the Indian multinational biotechnology Bharat Biotech is on the verge of introducing the Covid-19 vaccine for children. The Chairman of Bharat Biotech, Dr Krishna Ella, on Saturday stated that they are waiting for the approval of the Covid-19 vaccine for the children from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) and have also said that they have almost completed two trials for the nasal vaccine and that it has shown promising results.
He also said that the results of their vaccine for children were ‘excellent.
He further added, “We have done a clinical trial for gender and age, and the results are outstanding, the safety profile is commendable, safety is most important, SEC has approved it, and now we are waiting for the approval from the DCGI.”
If the vaccine gets approval from the DCGI, it will be used in kids aged between 2-18 years of age 9.
