The co-founder of Bengaluru-based Salt, a fintech platform that facilitates international transactions, Udita Pal, shared a post on Twitter about how she was going to get scammed on WhatsApp.
With the rise of internet users, the number of scammers is also increasing day by day. This widespread problem has been successful in trapping numerous victims, of which we have lost count. And with the advancement of technology, fraudsters are coming up with new and less detectable ways to rob people of their hard-earned money. However, Udita Pal had a completely different approach and won the internet with the clever ways with which she trolled the scammer and made everyone chuckle.
The scam
The scam had offered Ms.Pal a fake job. The scammer had asked her to like and subscribe to a YouTube video to get paid. The message from the scammer said that she did not need to pay any fees. Just a few minutes on her smartphone, and she can earn Rs. 150. The scammer claimed to be from Mumbai and contacted her from a strange number. Udita, on the other hand, was enjoying it and wanted to mess with the fraud himself.
Furthermore, the con artist informed Ms.Pal that he would assign her three duties, the first of which is to like a YouTube video and subscribe to the channel. He said to watch it for merely 10 seconds, and when she is done, she just has to send a screenshot. Ms.Pal answered, “okay doing,” and then uploaded a picture of another YouTube video with the amusing headline, “Caught some idiot trying to scam” which the internet found pretty hilarious. Later on, the fraud finally understood that he was being played, so he quickly decided to block her.
Udita’s approach not only exposed the scam but also provided the audience with much-needed comic relief in a stressful situation like this. She wanted to raise awareness, so she shared screenshots of her chat on social media to prevent others from falling prey to such scams. She captioned her post, saying that she was going to hell for this.
The Internet on this
Ms.Pal posted screenshots of her WhatsApp chat on Friday, and her post has received over 122k views, 1,200 likes, and various replies since then. While some users dubbed her chat “brilliant,” others simply flooded the section with laughing emojis.
One person remarked that they were also recently offered this job opportunity and are planning to retire early now. Another jokingly said that Udita should have offered them Salt for their cross-border payments to their employees, who are busy liking YouTube videos from abroad.
Another remarked that they felt good, although what they had done was less creative. They responded with a 20-second voice note, with sounds of them impersonating a large puke and loud farts that finished up runny, and then they blocked the scammer. Another added that the names are the worst part. The user even asked the scammer how they came up with these foreign names.
One even said that they deal with these con artists by sending them a 1,000-word essay on how scamming people can prove to be unethical. Many remained astonished that the scammer tried to extort money from her.
The fraud was caught
Devikar, a recruiter from Tarus Capital Company Limited in Mumbai, was identified as a suspected scammer and fraudster.
He had promised Udita Rs. 150 on WhatsApp, saying that they would pay her using UPI, Paytm, or a bank, but in reality, he was going to trick her. Well, in the end, the scammer fell into his own trap.
