Libya is a country currently engaged in a terrible natural calamity. This misfortune was unleashed because of a powerful storm that took over the country. Hence, allowing the nation to be flooded by debris and water. While no factual data has been reported from the scene, given the situation, many estimate that thousands of people might have lost their lives. Additionally, millions-worth of property has been devastated by the water.
The status regarding the Libyan floods
Reported by the east Libyan leader, the government has estimated the death toll to be over 2000, while more than thousand people are still missing. Jalel Harchaoui, one of the specialists, informed the BBC that the number of losses in terms of life might reach “several thousand people.”
Looking at the severity of the situation, the rescue missions were immediately carried out. Alas! It has been reported that more than seven Libyan army men have gone missing during these efforts. The circumstance has even led Storm Daniel who landed in the area on Sunday to urge the authorities to declare a situation of emergency.
Various areas of Libya have taken grave steps
It is only obvious for numerous cities in Libya to take every measure they can to minimise the damage. Hence, the eastern cities of Benghazi, Sousse, Derna and Al-Marj have imposed a strict curfew. All the shops and schools in the eastern region have been shut down.
The head of the Libya Red Cross Society reported that almost 150 homes have been destroyed in the eastern side and at least 150 deaths have occurred in the Dera region alone. This was also reported by the news agency Reuters.
It is salient to note that two of the biggest dams in the region collapsed with over 100,000 houses nearby. This has allowed the city to be swallowed by water and dust and most of the area is still submerged under people with many individuals missing. This led to the authorities declaring the port as a “disaster city.”
Alongside all the other areas, the city of Misrata from the west also got hit by the disastrous floods. Public clips of the storm have been making rounds of the internet and displaying the floods sweeping away various bodies along with full houses.
Some other videos showed cars only to be recognized from the visible roofs. All shops and schools seem to have faced horrendous situations, losing the majority of their assets.
Eastern Prime Minister Osama Hamad’s statements
The Prime Minister of the Eastern side of Libya told their News Channel that people are missing in thousands and the death toll has exceeded over 2000. Derna has the whole village disappeared, along with the residents of the place. All people and material there has been swept away by water.

Abdul Hamid Dheiba, the Prime Minister on Sunday directed that the damage caused should be looked at in an immediate manner. The United Nations had a similar approach and said that the next storm is being followed closely and there is full effort on providing urgent relief to the people in need of assistance at local and national level.
The Storm Daniel has been a catastrophic event for the nation, which encouraged governments on both sides to declare three days for mourning.
Prior to this, Greece, Turkey, and Bulgaria were struck by the same. The disaster results in loss of life and property. Now, Egypt has been preparing to be hit by the Storm Daniel as the reports had declared the storm moving toward the territory. While the prosecutions have been generated, the meteorological department also has issued a warning regarding the rise in the number of rainclouds over the northwestern coast.
Furthermore, climate scientists have issued statements warning people that global warming has caused more water evaporation than ever, which has further become the source of these storms.
