A massive aquarium that was located in the heart of Berlin exploded on Friday, unleashing a wave of destruction both within and outside the Sea Life tourist attraction, the German police said on Friday.

The “Aqua Dom” was home to 1,500 tropical fishes of 80 different species before the incident. It was described as the largest free-standing cylindrical aquarium in the world, it was 14m high (46 ft).
The aquarium was last modernized in 2020 and there is a clear-walled lift built inside for use by visitors. Some of the rooms at the hotel are marketed as having views of it.
Berlins fire brigade stated that there were more than 100 firefighters at the scene of the incident and the cause of the break was unknown. It claimed that while searching the hotel’s interior with rescue dogs for any potential victims, none were discovered.
The Karl-Liebknecht Street outside the hotel has been blocked, according to Berlin’s public transportation administration, because of “an extremely high volume of water on the road.” The area’s tram service was also stopped.
Police warned locals to drive carefully as “huge volumes” of water were gushing into the streets nearby. According to a police source who spoke to the local media, there is no proof that the breakage was caused by a targeted attack.

AquaDom was opened in December 2003 and was given the Guinness World Record for being the world’s largest cylindrical aquarium. It was estimated to have cost around €12.8 million (£11.2 million) to build at the time.
