Raghu Ram, a former Roadies judge for many seasons was once a contestant on Indian Idol, or was he?
The TV personality known for his hot temper and brazen words revealed on a recent episode of Cyrus Says, comedian Cyrus Broacha’s podcast, that he did not actually audition for the singing reality show, and was planted by producers to pick a fight with then-judges Farah Khan, Sonu Nigam, and Anu Malik.
Raghu’s prank on judges and audience
Unbeknownst to the judges, Ram was asked by producers to start a conflict in the judges’ chambers when he landed in Delhi after finishing shooting Roadies’ second season.
The crew members, which included his then-girlfriend, told him to start a fight in the judges’ chambers because “It will be fun.” He had no personal animosity towards the judges and was hesitant before finally agreeing to do the bit, he revealed on the podcast episode.
The viral clip
He shared that the incident which would later become viral on social media was quite funny, because he was reacting aggressively towards the judges rejecting him as he was asking them to calm down, all while they had no clue it was all staged.
Due to the chaotic nature of the clip, it had become viral online after being uploaded on YouTube. The public laughed at Raghu’s absurd behaviour and rejection–unaware it was a prank.
Allegedly, this information was also included in his memoir ‘Rearview: My Roadies Journey.’
Raghu Ram’s life and career
Born on April 15, 1975, in Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh, Raghu Ram shot to fame as one half of the dynamic duo responsible for creating and producing the groundbreaking show ‘MTV Roadies.’ Alongside his twin brother Rajiv Laxman, Raghu introduced an innovative concept that combined adventure, drama, and competition in a way that was previously unseen on Indian television and continues to be seen in reality shows today.
Raghu’s no-nonsense approach to reality TV marked a significant departure from the conventional norms of Indian entertainment. His trademark catchphrase “What the hell?” became a national catchphrase, capturing his straightforward and often confrontational style as he challenged participants to prove their mettle not just physically but mentally as well. This unapologetic and bold attitude earned him both ardent admirers and fierce critics, cementing his status as a polarizing yet unforgettable figure in the industry.
Beyond his on-screen persona, Raghu’s off-screen contributions have also been noteworthy. He is credited with introducing the concept of ‘Roadies Battleground,’ a digital platform that engages viewers and potential contestants in various tasks and challenges. This innovation expanded the show’s reach and engagement beyond television screens, tapping into the burgeoning digital landscape of India.
In 2014, Raghu and his brother parted ways with “MTV Roadies,” ending a long and impactful chapter of their careers. They also started a content studio called ‘Monozygotic Solutions Pvt. Ltd’ in the same year.
Raghu Ram’s Post-Roadies Life
Post 2014, Raghu attempted many different online series like ‘A.I.SHA My Virtual Girlfriend’ on content platform ‘Arre,’ and ‘Skulls and Roses’ for Amazon Primevideo, but met with failure and no critical acclaim.
He also participated in the AIB Knockout, a controversial roast event, with popular actors Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, director Karan Johar and the internet-famous comedy group AIB.
Raghu and his brother have also performed in comedy TV serials like Entertainment Ki Raat and acted in films like Tees Maar Khaan.
Raghu, interestingly, also received the GIMA award for Best Singer in 2012 for his song ‘Manmani,’ and acted in a Tamil film called ‘Doctor.’
While Raghu has had a shaky and surprising career, his personal life has been quite stable over the years.
After divorcing with wife Sugandha Garg after twelve years of marriage, Raghu married singer Natalie Di Luccio in 2018, and the pair was soon after blessed with a baby boy named Rhythm.
