Russia The Latest on the Ukraine Conflict:
- According to US media, Washington is negotiating with Poland to equip Ukraine with Soviet-era jets to reinforce Kyiv’s defenses against an invasion of Russia.
- Several news organizations’ claimed on Saturday that US officials informed them of a prospective arrangement in which Poland would give Soviet-era planes to Ukraine in exchange for American F-16 fighter jets.
- Since Russia’s invasion ten days ago, the war’s economic and humanitarian toll has risen dramatically, with officials reporting hundreds of civilian deaths. Western allies have rushed weapons, ammunition, and finances into Ukraine.
- Russian soldiers are targeting populous areas in Ukraine, according to British military intelligence, but the strength of the Ukrainian opposition is limiting their approach.
- In a recent briefing, British military intelligence stated,
“The extent and strength of Ukrainian resistance continue to surprise Russia.” “Russia has retaliated by hitting inhabited areas in a number of cities, including Kharkiv, Chernihiv, and Mariupol,”
says the statement.
“Russia has previously employed similar techniques, deploying both air and ground-based bombs, in Chechnya in 1999 and Syria in 2016,”
according to British military intelligence.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky calls US President Joe Biden to discuss financial help and penalties against Russia, hours after addressing US Congress via video conference.
- He has lobbied lawmakers for more cash as well as a restriction on Russian oil imports, but the White House has so far ruled out such a ban due to concerns that it would raise consumer costs.
- Zelensky further claims that he is appealing for Russian-made jets that his countrymen can fly. Visa and Mastercard have joined a growing list of foreign companies refusing to do business with Russia because of its invasion of Ukraine.
- Biden applauds the action, which comes as the US, its allies, and companies fight to keep Moscow out of the global economy. After a truce agreement to allow residents to flee the besieged northeastern city of Mariupol failed, Russia resumed its onslaught.
Each side accuses the other of being to fault. During the truce, Mariupol officials declared preparations for a large-scale evacuation, but subsequently indicated they had to postpone the operation due to continuous Russian bombardment. Russian military in Mariupol have been accused of preventing civilians from leaving.
