As spring covers Mars, there are markings in the shape of polygons on the surface. The red planet has four seasons each season’s duration is double as long as those on earth. Unlike earth where the spring season lasts for about ninety days, on Mars, it lasts for around one hundred and ninety days.Â
Mars has always piqued people’s curiosity and excitement as an inhospitable planet with the potential for life. A puzzling phenomenon on the planet is visible in a brand-new image taken by the High-Resolution Imaging Experiment (HiRISE) camera on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.
At high latitudes, the image depicts a network of white zigzags on the surface, with sporadic bursts of black and blue mist fanning out between them. The most important factor behind shaping the surface of Mars is the high latitude, where water and dry ice play a significant role.
The polygons are caused by water ice that is frozen in the soil and tearing it apart, claims the University of Arizona. In the spring, when surface ice sublimates into gas, the borders of these polygons begin to crack.
