The romantic drama of the year 2002 of Sanjay Leela Bhansali completes twenty years.
The movie Devdas was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and produced by Bharat Shah. It was a romantic drama movie. In the movie, the male lead was Shah Rukh Khan and female leads were Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit Nene.
The story of the movie is based on the novel Devdas of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. The writer of the movie is Prakash Ranjit Kapadia. The book was written in the year 1917 and the film made in the year 2002. It’s almost the difference of eighty-five years between the release of a book and the release of a movie.
Star cast of the movie also includes many great actors and actresses in the supporting roles like Jackie Shroff, Kiran Kher, Smita Jaykar and Vijayendra Ghatge. The film was first released in the month of May in the Cannes Film Festival. And after that, the movie was released worldwide in the month of July.
Shah Rukh Khan played the role of Devdas while Aishwarya Rai Bachchan played the role of Devdas’s childhood friend named Parvati(Paro) and Madhuri Dixit Nene played the role of Chandramukhi.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie Devdas was the third Hindi remake of the Bengali novel of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. After reading the novel a second time, Sanjay Leela Bhansali decided to make a movie based on the novel.
The story of the movie was , Devdas who belongs to an upper class rich Bengali family went to London for his graduation and came back to marry his childhood friend Parvati. But because of the rejection of Parvati by his own family, Devdas turned into an alcoholic.
Chandramukhi was a dancer and because of the heartbreak and after the marriage of Parvati with someone else, Devdas started going to Chandramukhi’s place to watch her dance with his friend. The story shows the heartbreak and separation of two lovers.
Devdas was one of the most expensive Indian films of that time. The budget of the movie was around 500 million rs. . From that, 200 million rs. It was only spent on the sets of the movie. The movie is based on the old architecture of Calcutta buildings of the British Raj period.
The movie was a commercial success and the highest grossing movie of the year. 1.68 billion rs. of earnings made by the movie at the box office. And also won many awards. The film won the National Film Award, Filmfare Awards, Award for the Best Director, Award for the Best Actor, Award for the Best Actress and Award for the Best supporting Actress as well. The movie was also nominated for the BAFTA Award for the Best Non-English Film.
As on the 20 years of completion or on the 20th anniversary of the movie Devdas both the actress of the movie Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit Nene shared the poster of the movie on their Instagram handle by writing the 20th anniversary of the movie.
As we all know that not only the story of the movie has become so popular, even the songs of the film have also become popular. The songs of the movie have amazing aesthetics and set-ups . Not only that, but the songs of the movie are still very popular and trending as well.
Choreographers like Saroj Khan, Vaibhavi Merchant and Birju Maharaj did the choreography and made it even more beautiful. The costumes for the movie were designed by Neeta Lulla, Abu Jani, Sandeep Khosla and Reza Shariffi which took the Bengali dressing to another level.
As at the end all we can say is that the overall movie’s story, concept, costumes, setups, theme, cast, performance, style, sound design, screenplay, dialogues, script, narratives all together made a great work which is still in all of our mind and heart.
