A man slit his 8-month pregnant wife’s throat over dowry in Morti village, Ghaziabad on Monday. Later he called his in-laws and informed them about the murder and asked them to collect her dead body.
According to the victim’s family, their son-in-law has been harassing them for the past few days, asking for dowry.
“I have killed her. Come and take her”, he told her family. The victim’s family rushed to the police as soon as they received the news. Following this, the police reached the scene and found 8-month pregnant Tanu’s body and sent it for post-mortem.
Dowry leads to murder
The accused, Ankit, who previously worked for a private company, married Tanu on July 10, 2016. According to the statement given by Tanu’s parents, Ankit and their daughter were not on good terms for some time. Both Ankit and his parents harassed Tanu for dowry. They took away her mobile and suspected her of infidelity.
Day of the murder
The incident took place at around 2 am on Monday, when Ankit slit his pregnant wife’s throat while she was sleeping on their bed.
He sits beside his dead wife’s body for the next two hours after which he informs his in-laws over a phone call.
Around 5 am, Ankit goes to the Nandgram police station and confesses to the violent crime that he committed. Police arrested him on the same day.
However, Ankit refuses to admit that he murdered his wife over Dowry. According to him, Tanu was having an affair and he had found out about it. The couple had stopped communicating for the last few days which only added fuel to his anger.
Further Investigation
A case was registered after the victim’s family filed a complaint. Police arrested Ankit and recovered the knife used in the murder as well.
Tanu’s father filed another complaint against Ankit and his family. The FIR was filed under section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), section 498A (husband or in-laws subjecting to cruelty), and section 304B (dowry death) of the IPC and Dowry Act.
