May 8, 2022, the Aam Aadmi Party and the Delhi Police engaged in a verbal battle over the city’s soaring crime rate. The Aam Aadmi Party blamed the police for the city’s deteriorating law and order situation, claiming that they were too busy protecting BJP officials.Â
The police responded by saying that the AAP’s assertions are political in nature and that the agency is not hiding anyone because all criminals are treated equally.Â
“Delhi Police is the best-performing state in Crime & Criminal Tracking Network System implementation. Delhi Police was adjudged the best police in National Digital Evidence Contest, 2021” it said in a statement.
At a press conference, AAP leader Atishi cited a number of recent crime instances in the national capital, accusing the Delhi Police of failing to keep crime under control. She claimed the city police were entrusted with defending “BJP goons”/BJP leaders.
She further added that the law and order situation in the national capital has deteriorated to the point where culprits opened fire on individuals seated in a car in a crowded market in Subhash Nagar and easily escaped the scene.
Atishi talked about the incident that took place in the Subhash Nagar market at 7.30 p.m. on May 7, 2022. The massacre took place when three people opened fire on passengers in a car in the middle of a crowded street and then fled the scene. Despite the fact that the shooting occurred over 15-20 hours ago, the Delhi police have taken no action. She added that when it comes to “shielding” a BJP politician, the police move with “unparalleled efficiency and speed,” but when a horrible crime occurs against innocent Delhiites, they are found to be immovable.
In response to her allegations, the police announced they had detained a suspect in the Subhash Nagar incident within 24 hours. Efforts are underway to apprehend two more co-accused that have been identified. According to the latest crime data, Delhi has the highest conviction rate for IPC crimes (85.5 percent), compared to a national average of 59 percent. The conviction rate in rape cases in Delhi is 21% higher than the national average.
It went on to say that other occurrences of serious injuries would be met with harsh punishment. According to the police, there has been a 74% increase in arrests made in the last two years as part of a policy of strictest possible legal action and zero tolerance for such offenses.
