Concerning rising tensions along Ukraine’s border with Russia, India, at a special meeting of the UN Security Council on Thursday, stressed the need for all sides to exercise utmost restraint and intensify diplomatic efforts to ensure a mutually cordial solution.
The statement was made in the backdrop of the UNSC recognizing the independence of Donetsk and Ukraine’s Luhansk territories as separated by Russia.
The US and allies requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Russia’s recognition of separatist regions in Ukraine as an independent.
Speaking at the UNSC briefing on developments in Ukraine, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, TS Trimurthi, said that escalating tensions along Ukraine’s border with Russia can undermine the peace and security of the region.
Trimurthi called on all parties to exercise restraint.
“The immediate priority is to de-escalate tensions, taking into account the legitimate security interests of all the countries, and aim to achieve long-term peace and stability in the region and beyond,”he said.
He also emphasized that the issue could be resolved only through diplomatic negotiations.
