COVID-19 outbreak in Assam
The COVID-19 outbreak in Assam has been linked to individuals who attended the Tablighi Jamaat religious organization’s conference at Nizamuddin Markaz (Delhi) and did not report to authorities upon their return to Assam.
Of the total COVID-19 patients in Assam, 37 are either attendees or contacts of Tablighi Jamaat. The COVID-19 tally in Assam has also increased as a result of some pilgrims from Ajmer Sharif Dargah (Rajasthan) who arrived by bus in the Silchar city of Cachar district on 6 May. Later, ten pilgrims tested positive for coronavirus, and the others were quarantined in accordance with protocol. As migrant workers and Assamese stranded in other parts of the country returned to Assam, the state saw an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases. Many of them tested positive for coronavirus while in quarantine at the state’s quarantine facilities.
Many frontline COVID-19 fighters have tested positive in Assam in the fight against coronavirus. Many of them have since recovered, but only a few have died. So far, the Assam Police Department has recorded 3,005 COVID-19 cases among its officers. Of those, 2,274 have recovered, 723 are being treated, and eight have died as a result of the virus.
