India continues to buy Russian oil and has declined to vote in UN resolutions denouncing Moscow
India is an exclusion amongst Washington’s associates with its shaky response to the Russian attack on Ukraine. Told US president Joe Biden on Monday. Biden praised the US-led alliance’s united stance against President Vladimir Putin, including NATO, the European Union, and key Asian partners.
It includes damaging Russia’s economy, international trade, and access to high-tech goods through unprecedented sanctions. Unlike the other members of the Quad, Australia, Japan, and the United States, India continues to buy Russian oil and has declined to vote in UN resolutions denouncing Moscow.
There had been “a united front throughout NATO and in the Pacific” Biden said while addressing a summit of US business leaders in Washington. With the probable exception of India, which has been shaky on some of this, the Quad has been extraordinarily firm in dealing with Putin’s aggression.
According to Biden, Putin was depending on being able to break NATO, but NATO has never been stronger, more united in its entire existence than it is today. Even as the West strives to isolate Moscow, Indian oil refiners are continuing to buy inexpensive Russian oil.
Last week, an Indian government official stated that the world’s third-largest consumer of crude imports about 85 per cent of its needs, with Russia providing only a “marginal” 1% of that. However, the increase in oil prices because of the Ukraine crisis has added to our challenges.
India must continue to focus on competitive energy sources, the official added. New Delhi, which has had close ties with Moscow in the past, has called for an end to the carnage in Ukraine but has not denounced Russia’s invasion, abstaining in three UN votes.
