Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reminded everyone that no non-BJP government has ever allowed a governor to inaugurate or lay the cornerstone for a legislative assembly building.
On Wednesday, the BJP referred to the opposition’s position that the President should have opened the new Parliament building rather than the PM as unfortunate.

Sarma tweeted that five state administrations that aren’t affiliated with the BJP or the opposition have laid the cornerstone for new legislative assembly buildings or inaugurated them in the past nine years. Both the CM and the party leader handled each task. The governor or the president weren’t invited in any of the cases. The Assam CM cited instances of the construction of assembly buildings in Jharkhand and Assam in 2014, Andhra Pradesh in 2018, Chhattisgarh in 2020, and Telangana in 2024.
Sarma attacked the opposition parties, saying they had not anticipated the inauguration of the new Parliament building so soon. Sarma stated to reporters, “The boycott is apparent. They were against building Parliament House. They had no idea that the building would be finished so quickly.”
They are acting out the boycott’s ridiculousness only to save face. The opening of Parliament House will take place on Veer Savarkar’s birthday. They might even boycott the event for this reason, the chief minister continued.

In response to the tweet, BJP chief spokesperson Anil Baluni claimed that the incidents exposed the opposition’s political dishonesty. He said that this is blatant hypocrisy.

Bhatia asserted that the opposition’s boycott was just another manifestation of their tremendous animosity for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which had reached such a level that these parties had chosen to abstain from an occasion that the entire nation was proud of.
According to Congress leader Acharya Pramod Krishnan, the opposition should reconsider its decision to skip the opening of the new Parliament building. He asserted that the opposition is going too far in its opposition to Modi and that the PM is the most suited person to dedicate the new Parliament building. According to him, the opposition should criticize Modi’s policies but not his position because the prime minister represents the entire nation, not just the party.
Opposition Boycotts New Parliament Inauguration
19 opposition parties stated on Wednesday that they will not attend the official opening of the new Parliament building in a show of solidarity, claiming that there is no point in erecting a new structure when democracy has been destroyed. Nevertheless, Prime Minister Modi’s choice of inaugurating the new Parliament building alone, completely excluding President Droupadi Murmu, is not only a serious insult but also an attack on our democracy that calls for a corresponding response.
The united statement was signed by the Congress, Trinamool Congress, DMK, Janata Dal (United), AAP, CPI-M, SP, CPI, NCP, SS (UBT), RJD, IUML, NC, JMM, KC (M), RSP, VCK, MDMK, and RLD.
Apart from these 19 parties, Asaduddin Owaisi, the leader of All India Majili-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), also declared that his party would not attend the ceremony if Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Parliament building. Modi’s goal is to inaugurate everything because the BJP believes that nothing occurred prior to 2014. If that is the case, we won’t go to that event, he informed the press.
