Boris Bondarev quits in an email written to over 40 colleagues at the UN.
GENEVA: Prominent Russian diplomat resigns in protest of Putin’s war on Ukraine.
Boris Bondarev walked into work like any other day, however, handed in a resignation email. The long text suggests high ranking officials in Russian foreign services complied with Putin’s war efforts.” Russian Diplomat: Putin To Remain in Power Forever”.
“For twenty years of my diplomatic career I have seen different turns of our foreign policy, but never have I been so ashamed of my country as on February 24 of this year.” Boris writes in a letter on Monday. Bondarev began serving as a diplomat in 2002 and continued to serve in several foreign ministry positions until his resignation. “Russian Diplomat: Putin To Remain in Power Forever”.
The Diplomat’s Statement:
The statement goes on to read “The aggressive war unleashed by Putin against Ukraine, and, against the entire Western world, is not only a crime against the Ukrainian people but also, perhaps, the most serious crime against the people of Russia, with a bold letter Z crossing out all hopes and prospects for a prosperous free society in our country.” The letter “Z” is a symbol of support for the Russian army in the Ukraine conflict. Reports suggest the use of the letter to show support to Putin is widespread amongst his followers.
In the note, Bondarev suggests that high ranking officials turn a blind eye or even contributed to the war efforts. “Those who conceived this war wanted to remain in power forever. To live in pompous tasteless palaces, sail on yachts comparable in tonnage and cost to the entire Russian Navy. Enjoying unlimited power and complete impunity. To achieve that they are willing to sacrifice as many lives as it takes. Thousands of Russians and Ukrainians have already died just for this.” He wrote.
The veteran diplomat goes on to describe an unprofessional foreign ministry. He alleges a high level of bias comparable to the propaganda of early Soviet Russia. Specifically, the foreign minister Lavrov is described as a “ once educated man” who now threatens the world with nuclear weapons.
Dissent In Russia:
Russia is currently embroiled in a deadly war with Ukraine over the latter’s wish to join NATO. Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to lay siege to Ukrainian cities in late February. The conflict spurred deadly combat, nuclear scares as well as global food, finance and oil instability. Some fear this could be the beginning of a widespread global conflict.
