During a press briefing yesterday, White House spokesperson Jen Psaki said that China could not cover Russia for the impact caused by the US and European sanctions, referring to the multitude of sanctions that were to be imposed on Russia after military forces began their attack on Ukraine borders early Thursday morning.
“[China] they cannot cover what the impact of the sanctions that have been announced in coordination with Europe would, how they would impact Russia,” Psaki said during the press briefing.
When asked whether the US was prepared to accept refugees from Ukraine, Psaki responded by saying, “We are, but we certainly expect that most, if not the majority, will want to go to Europe in neighbouring countries.”
Jen Psaki added that the US has “been talking and engaging with Europeans about” the prospect of refugees “for some time,” noting that the US is “working with European countries on what the needs are, where there is capacity.” She also mentioned that they are in conversation with congress and that US president Joe Biden is having ongoing discussions and would consider what Ukrainians need on the ground, in a variety of categories: security, humanitarian, and other economic assistance.
Biden announced that US would implement “severe sanctions” against Russia to isolate the nation from the global economy. In an earlier statement, he said that imposing export blocks on technology from the west would severely limit Russia’s ability to advance its military and
aerospace sector. He also applied sanctions on several Russian banks and “corrupt billionaires” and their families who are close to the Kremlin.
Earlier, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying commented on the crisis, calling “all sides to exercise restraint to prevent the situation from getting out of control,” On queries from journalists questioning Russia’s actions, she said, “This is perhaps a difference between China and you Westerners. We won’t go rushing to a conclusion,” adding that the Ukrainian issue has a complicated historical background and it may not be as everyone sees.
