The DC universe has two new heads or co-CEOs rather, that will be in charge of its films, TV series and animation under DC Studios. Guardians of the Galaxy Director, James Gunn and Producer, Peter Safran have been selected as co-chairs of the company.
James Gunn: The ‘Kevin Feige’ of DC Studios
There is truly a silver lining at the edge of every cloud. DC has just recently released an announcement of the new CEOS who will represent the company as the heads of the hierarchy.
Director, James Gunn and Producer, Peter Safran are now the new co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios, a recent and new category or division under Warner Bros. Discovery that focuses on films that are based on DC comic superhero/villain characters and storylines.
DC Studios is said to replace DC Films and start afresh with a new direction and vision in mind.
The responsibility of this direction and vision will be taken by James Gunn, who is a prolific filmmaker and one who has experience in the superhero/villain genre of films and Peter Safran will serve as the producer and will handle all accounts of financial aspects related to DC Studios.
Prior to this, David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery was having a difficult time, spending several months in search of the perfect leader(s) capable enough to bring in a much needed and desirable change in the DC universe.
James Gunn and Peter Safran will replace Walter Hamada, the former DC Films head.
The revelation of James Gunn’s appointment as the new co-head of DC Studios was flabbergasting to most fans as many wouldn’t believe that a filmmaker would take on the position of an executive in a company.
Also, James Gunn had not shown or displayed any interest in joining the DC universe as an executive leader but only worked with them as a director on the movie, Suicide Squad and the TV series, Peacemaker.
Nonetheless, the fans are hyped and overjoyed upon hearing the news of Gunn’s ascent as co-CEO of DC Studios and are looking forward to seeing the new and connected universe of films, TV and animation under Gunn’s and Safran’s supervision.
DC’s previous releases have been disastrous. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Warner Bros. and DC Films.
From the ‘release demand’ of the Snyder cut and the Snyderverse to the recent termination of all ongoing projects under the company. DC has been facing a lot of heat, especially from avid superhero comic fans.
The films released under the franchise also were not able to catch up with the expectations of fans and viewers.
Critically speaking, previous DC films were mostly a miss and unable to make a good impression on critics.
Fans of the DC franchise share their sigh of relief to finally know that the Studios is now in good hands. The advent of James Gunn is immaculate considering his experience with Marvel Studios.
Gunn, especially, is conversant with the concept of directing and envisioning superhero films. He has worked with Marvel Studios to produce the hilarious blockbuster film, Guardians of the Galaxy.
The film garnered a lot of positive feedback from viewers, performed well in the box office and was critically acclaimed also.
Gunn is also familiar with superhero comics and is known to be a keen fan.
This is a plus point for Warners Bros. and DC Studios, as having someone who shares the interests and sentiments of the fans and the audience at the top executive level can only mean good things.
This means that Gunn will be able to exact the things that his audience want to see in a superhero/villain movie.
There is relatability between Gunn and his fans that will ultimately lead to good superhero movies that are cohesive and meaningful.
There is also the potentiality of a DC and Marvel crossover now because of Gunn as the new head of DC Studios.
With Marvel Studios incorporating the idea of the multiverse, otherwise known as the Multiverse Saga, Feige and Gunn could perhaps in the near future work together as executives on a crossover between the two iconic Studios.
Gunn has worked with Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, as a Director. Gunn mentioned that when he was offered the job, Kevin Feige was the first person he went to speak to about the offer and no one else.
Gunn is still a part of the MCU with his movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is set to be released in May 2024.Â
