The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Delhi on Wednesday in response to the city’s moderating light rainfall prediction.
The yellow alert indicating a likelihood of heavy rainfall across the city aims to make people aware of the changing weather conditions signaling the possibility of hazards.
Relief to Delhites Post Rain
As light rains of varying intensities sweep across the central areas of Delhi, residents are experiencing a much-needed reprieve from the relentless heat that gripped the city. In recent weeks, the sweltering heat has taken a toll on the city’s population, leading to various health problems and inconveniences.
Compared to the previous day’s scorching high temperature of 35.8 degrees Celsius, Wednesday’s drop in temperature is a welcome change, with the mercury expected to hover around 34 degrees.
The sudden drop in temperature offers some relief to the people of Delhi, who have been anxiously awaiting the monsoon’s arrival since the hot summer months were wrapping up.
Hotter Than Usual August Months Yearning For Rain
Delhi has been grappling with higher daytime temperatures this August compared to previous years. Notably, the city recorded its highest August daytime temperature at 38.1 degrees Celsius, surpassing the readings for the last four Augusts. This heatwave had left the city sweltering and desperate for respite.
The weather department has forecasted a significant temperature drop in stark contrast to the scorching temperatures that characterized the start of August. This change is primarily attributed to the light rain expected in the coming days, providing much-needed relief and respite to the residents.
However, it’s worth noting that the monsoon has arrived later than usual in Delhi this year. While monsoon showers typically grace the city by June, they did not arrive until June 31 last year. This delay has caused water scarcity and agriculture concerns, as the city relies heavily on monsoon rains for its water supply and irrigation.
Temperatures Might Further Increase Post Rain: IMD
While many welcome the recent rain as a relief from the heatwave, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a relatively dry period for Delhi from August 24 through August 29. During this period, temperatures are expected to rise to 38 degrees Celsius.
However, it’s not all gloom and doom. According to the forecasts, the remaining days of August should bring significantly more agreeable weather than what was experienced on Wednesday, striking a balance between the scorching heat and the much-needed rain.
Similar Rainy Temperatures Expected in Neighbouring areas
IMD’s forecasts extend beyond Delhi, with widespread rainfall expected in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand during the same prediction duration. These areas, nestled in the vicinity of the Himalayas, are likely to receive regular to above-normal rainfall, thanks to their geographical proximity to the mountains.
In contrast, other parts of the country continue to grapple with below-normal rainfall, raising concerns about water resources and agriculture in those regions.
While Delhi residents enjoy a brief respite from the blistering heat due to light rains and a temporary temperature dip, the city must remain vigilant for potential fluctuations in the weather.
IMD’s yellow alert serves as a crucial reminder to stay prepared and safe, as weather conditions in this region can change rapidly. The delayed monsoon arrival also highlights the need for long-term climate resilience planning in the face of changing weather patterns.
