HBO just stated that the original six episodes of The Idol will be cut short at episode five owing to low ratings and constant criticism of the show. Fans of BLACKPINK’s Jennie were able to see her screen time stretch to nearly 3 minutes on the fourth episode as her character journey took a significant turn. Dyanne (Jennie’s character) was given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity when she was signed to Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) label and received her song.
The Idol:
The Idol portrays the interaction between pop idol stars and the industry in which they work. Lily-Rose Depp plays the major part of Jocelyn, while Jennie makes her acting debut as Jocelyn’s companion and backing artist Dyanne. Because of her part in The Idol, Jennie received special attention on the red carpet at the 76th Cannes Film Festival.
However, The Idol, which was acclaimed for its outstanding quality in the teaser, has been embroiled in various issues since its premiere episode on June 4th. The Idol’s second season was originally planned, however, production is presently on hold.

The criticism:
When the show’s premise was first announced, fans were excited because real pop singers like The Weeknd, Troye Sivan, and BLACKPINK’s Jennie would be able to convey the truly dark side of the industry adequately. There was a lot of eager talk throughout social media with The Weeknd as the producer, which slowed down a little bit after critics slandered the show at its viewing at the Cannes Film Festival. They referred to it as ‘torture p**n,’ a ‘sadistic mess,’ and other derogatory terms, which stunned the thrilled viewers who knew it would be edgy but did not expect such severe reactions.
However, when the first episode aired, the naysayers were proven correct, and the show received a lot of hostility and condemnation for its misogynistic and vulgar image of the profession. They essentially vilified everyone in the industry, including the principal protagonists.
