On Friday, The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in the Northeast area of India. A red alert has been issued for the next two day in Meghalaya, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
After sustained torrential rains across the state, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has issued a warning for landslides and flood-prone areas, causing surface connectivity to be momentarily disrupted.
At 0.9 km above mean sea level, an east-west trough flows from southeast Uttar Pradesh to Manipur, passing through Bihar, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, and Meghalaya, according to the weather service.
The IMD issued a red alert, warning of mild to moderate rainfall in most parts of Assam and Meghalaya, with occasional heavy to extremely heavy rains.
On Saturday, the rainfall intensity in Arunachal will be similar.
A red alert is an indication for a warning that it is going to rain heavy to extremely heavy rainfall which is over 20cm in 24 hours, similarly orange alert denotes heavy rain around 6cm to 20cm rainfall in 24 hours.
The death toll in rains in Meghalaya rose to three on Saturday as one more person drowned in a swollen river in East Khasi Hills district, an official said. “Two persons who went fishing from Mawber village yesterday went missing. One of them was found dead after getting washed ashore downstream. Another one is missing,” a senior police officer told PTI. He said the search and rescue operation for the missing person is on. Heavy rains lashed Meghalaya on Thursday night and Friday as the capital city witnessed one of the highest rainfall caused by moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal, officials said. Two persons died in East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi district on Friday.
