Italy is Europe’s fourth-largest economy, and the voters of the country will vote on 25 September. The prediction is that Italy’s parliament will soon be filled with conservative-leaning government officials.
According to the final official polls, the coalition party “Brothers of Italy” headed by right-wing leaders like Giorgia Meloni is predicted to win by two-thirds of the votes.
Italy and the importance of their elections
If a far-right party will lead the country then it can have several consequences not only for Italy but for the whole European Union. Even after the coalition parties have emphasized commitment to the NATO and bloc, the alliance with the anti-immigration, hardline league of Matteo Salvini is still doubted.
This year Meloni’s alliance which boasts of being a post-fascist party has garnered an increase of votes 25% from 4% in 2018.
The 45-year-old Italian leader Meloni says that fascism is a relic of the past in Italy and she seems to have distanced herself from fascist ideologies. But she is also in favor of banning gay rights, is heavily anti-immigration, and also idealizes the Hungarian nationalist leader Viktor Obran. Meloni previously had strayed outside of the Brother of Italy party’s public ideologies which seems to have boosted her credibility a little bit.
She is making waves of restlessness across the country for slogans like “Less Europe, but a better Europe” and “Family, fatherland, and God.”
Italy and the past unstable leadership
After the collapse of their coalition, Mario Draghi, former Prime Minister of the country resigned. PM Mario who was a former honcho of the European central bank was a popular choice to raise the country out of its pandemic slump 18 months ago.
Though his term had proved to be stable and an economic recovery period. He was in the office for a year and a half. This governance fell apart after the Five-star anti-establishment movement withdrew their support, and other cooperation parties like the League and Forza also cut off their ties with PM Mario’s National Unity government.
The withdrawing movement was heavily disliked by the general public of the nation which seems to have played a part in influencing the voters in the favor of Brothers of Italy rather than the League or M5S. It is estimated that Brothers of Italy voters can be double that of the Leagues from this year.
Italy and the future Prime Minister
Despite being in controversy over posting a rape video on Twitter, Giorgia Meloni is still very popular in Italy and has been riding waves of success in this election. She is a mastermind in blending emotion over highly debatable topics like Christianity, motherhood, and patriotism.
She is just on the cusp of winning and holding the honor of becoming “Italy’s first female prime minister” and the controversial title of being Italy’s first far-right leader since world war II.
Meloni is perceived as a clear and consistent person, who has a coherent approach to politics. As she doesn’t compromise and is creditable, people in the majority have favorable opinions of her. But, of course, not everyone agrees with her beliefs.
Her aggressive statements on the world stage have earned her some flak but most of the time, Meloni dodges them easily. A few months before she had made statements like “Yes to natural families, No to LGBT lobbies.”
In her speech in Spain, Meloni had also shown support for Vox, Spain’s far-right party. She had to apologize for her tone but no remorse was felt when she again made slammed Brussels authorities and denied climate change. She also puts heavy emphasis on motherhood and has been the one who popularized the phrase “woman and motherhood”. She has a young daughter.
So far, she has not made any remarks about abortion or abortion rights but Meloni has talked about the decreasing birth rates in Italy. She is very vocal about her identity as a Christian woman and that no one can take away her right to be that.
The Italian elections are getting heated as the result date draws closer. It is predictable that whatever the outcome might be, Italy is going to have an eventful year.
