An old name in the GOP, Liz Cheney had to face defeat in the primary elections. Cheney, like her father, has been one of the primary anti-Trump voices in the party. Her defeat resonates with a largely conservative crowd that still believes in Trump’s wild conspiracy theories.
On Tuesday, the results of the primary elections came in which effectively ousted Liz Cheney from the election race. Cheney is one of the few Republicans who have taken a stance against former president Donald Trump and his politics.
Now that she has faced defeat in her home state, it reflects on America’s future. This also reflects the political scenario in the run-up to the 2024 presidential elections.
Liz Cheney and her defeat
Daughter of the former Vice-President Dick Cheney, Liz Cheney and her father are notable critics of Donald Trump. These results reflect that the voices of all the anti-Trump party members seem to be drowning. Especially in the light of the recent investigations on Trump.
Ms. Cheney conceded her defeat to a newcomer and lawyer Harriet Hageman. Donald Trump is backing Harriet Hageman.
Ms. Hageman, who initially started as a critic of Donald Trump soon turned into his vocal supporter. Even her election campaign relied heavily on his image, with media campaigns claiming that the 2020 ‘elections were rigged’.
Her outspoken support for him earned her Trump’s endorsement. In her winning address, she said that the Republicans will “hold our elected officials accountable for their actions” and “dislodge entrenched politicians”, she added.
Wyoming was Trump’s biggest victory as 70% of the population voted for him in 2020. Naturally, Hageman saw an opportunity in it and used this very support for him to gain victory. Hageman, who was once a friend, decided to run against her as she “betrayed Wyoming, betrayed the country and she betrayed me”.
She had already started to make her plans to face off against Cheney last year as she talked to the New York Times, “[I] heard and believed the lies the Democrats and Liz Cheney’s friends in the media were telling at the time”
Donald Trump was not far behind in his criticism of her,” Liz Cheney should be ashamed of herself, the way she acted, and her spiteful, sanctimonious words and actions towards others.” “Now she can finally disappear into the depths of political oblivion where I am sure, she will be much happier than she is right now.” he further opined.
Cheney, unlike Trump, accepted her defeat, while also claiming “Our work is far from over” referring to her campaign against the former president and stopping him from running for 2024.
Cheney and other anti-Trump voices
Liz Cheney was one of the only two members of the GOP in the congressional committee responsible for investigating Trump. Moreover, she was also one of the notable voices who voted for Donald Trump to be impeached.
It is very interesting to note that out of the 10 members who also voted for his impeachment, four have retired while four have lost the elections. Only New house and Valadao have won the primary elections.
Cheney has made her position very clear on the January 6 Capitol riot, “I have said since 6 January that I will do whatever it takes to ensure Donald Trump is never again near the Oval Office, and I mean it”
Now, Cheney has even a tougher road ahead of her considering that Trump has intensified his ‘revenge plan’ against his party critics. Cheney could directly face off against Trump in 2024 as she has hinted at running for the White House.
