Bollywood is one of the most popular forms of entertainment within the country, it’s also a space where misogyny is both produced and consumed. It indulges in the commonly orthodox social frames and more recently has identified women for spreading obscenity and misogyny
After the first song from the movie Pathaan (Besharam Rang) got released actress Deepika Padukone became the victim of online trolling for the costumes she donned in the song.
The criticism of Besharam Rang and the start of #BoycottPathaan the former member of Lok Sabha social media head of Congress actor Divya Spandana shared her thoughts regarding this on social media calling misogyny the biggest evil and also mentioning the past trolls of many more actresses.
The actress- Divya Ramya- criticized misogyny on Twitter calling out the people of India who are prejudiced against women. She also mentions other actresses Samantha Ruth Prabhu- for her divorce, Sai Pallavi- for her statement regarding Kashmir Files, Rashmika Mandanna- for her separation from an actor, and Deepika Padukone- for her costumes have been trolled for the choices they made regarding their personal life.
“Samantha trolled for her divorce, Sai Pallavi for her opinion, Rashmika for her separation, Deepika for her clothes, and many, many other women for pretty much EVERYTHING. Freedom of choice is our basic right. Women are the embodiment of Maa Durga- misogyny is an evil we must fight,” she shared.
Home Minister of Madhya Pradesh Narottam Mishra started the opposition against the costumes used saying that if they change the costumes- as they are objectionable- in the song they will rethink about the release of the moive Pathaan in M.P.
In support of Deepika Padukone, Bengali actor and Trinamool Congress leader Nussrat Jahan raised her voice in the interview with NDTV.
She said “It is not about anybody’s ideology. It is about a party in power trying to create such a picture in a group of people. So whatever they are doing, they are nothing spiritual, or religious, just a well-planned conspiracy. That’s why they are talking about culture, bikini-wearing women.”
Furthermore, she also said “They have a problem with women wearing hijab. They have a problem with women wearing bikini. What they are trying to do…what is called a new, developed India these days is very scary. I fear where it will take all of us in the times to come.”
Misogyny in Indian films
Suppressing and degrading women have been normalised now. People don’t objectify to the movies which raise patriarchy and objectifying women in every movie through item songs. The movies shoes women in all time princess look, blushing throughout the movie adorned with jwellery. Showing womens’ legs and men eyeing them. Portraying men as honourable, innocent victim, handsome, dancer, fighter and many more qualities which have women swooning around him.
These movie objeectify women by showing their beauty in their faces bodies and legs. Disgusing patriarchy showing by turning this into calling worshipping women.
These movies are watched men and restricted to be released by men. Men who live with women, work with women.
Furthermore, these movies are reflection of the reality of our lives, so we should change our realities. Society can rise above patriarchy and respect women sincerely.
